After starting the engine, a loud explosion was heard in the engine room.. I dove down into the engine room to be confronted with billows of smoke and gushing water. I scrambled down, choking on smoke and getting soaked by the water. In the darkness I closed the thru hull valves and turned off the engine. I put out radio contact to our friends aboard Fantasia who valiantly stood by while I evaluated the damages. Here we were, so close to shore with this building surge. I began to realize how vulnerable we were and many thoughts went through my mind, not the least of which was my 4 sleeping children oblivious to the commotion all around them.
